400m hurdler Alex, from Duffield, is a member of Amber Valley & Erewash Athletic Club. The 17-year-old Ecclesbourne School student was selected to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the European Athletics Youth Championships, where he finished seventh in the final and ran a personal best of 53.02s.
Alex says: "I've been doing this event for three years and progressed significantly as an athlete. I have been successful at my age group at both national and international competitions.
"In making my GB&NI debut, I competed in the final of the 400m hurdles at the Under-18 European Championships in Tbilisi Georgia and ran a PB of 53.02 seconds. This was a great experience to aid my development in becoming a better athlete for the future, while accelerating my learning curve.
"The current training I am doing this winter period is: speed endurance running sessions; strength and conditioning in the gym; and I am working hard on improving my hurdling technique.
"Next season my main goal and motivation is to be selected for the GB&NI team to compete at the Under-20 European Junior Championships in Italy.
"My other goal is to try and make it to the finals and finish on the podium at the nation competitions as an Under-20.
"My ultimate sporting ambition is to one day win medals for GB in the Olympic Games, European and World Athletics Championships, whilst competing to the best of my ability. I also want to be a role model for young athletes to inspire them to fulfil their dreams."
