Zak Prince

Zak Prince.

The 15-year-old canoeist from Long Eaton is a student at Friesland School and a member of the Holme Pierrepoint Canoe Club. He finished fifth overall and second in his class at the K1M Junior Championships, competed for Great Britain at the Junior Cup Event in the Czech Republic and has been a member of the Central Area Super Regional Squad.

Zak says: I have just completed another season of canoe slalom races, with 24 weekends away around the UK. The season ended with a weekend of profiling at Holme Pierrepont (HPP) to hopefully retain my position on the England Talent Programme. I will find out my Programme status soon.

"It has been an exciting season with a fifth place finish in the GB Junior Championships, held at Pinkston (Glasgow) and the opportunity to race at a Junior Cup event in Ceske Budejovice (Czech Republic), where I made the final on both days.

"My squad's summer training camp was in Prague this year with the bonus of also being able to paddle at Leipzig in Germany on the way out to Prague.

"I achieved my main season goal of gaining promotion to the Premier Division, in K1, at the end of the summer holidays. It was extra special as I achieved promotion at my home course HPP, in a Premier race, beating more than 40% of the top paddlers to gain enough points for promotion from Division One.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ben and Finn, fellow squad members and ICON recipients, on their GB Junior Team selection in C2 this year.

"I'd like to thank ICON and Derbyshire Sport for supporting me again this year, my coaches for investing so much time and my family for always offering encouragement, financial support & transport...I couldn't do it without them."
