Young Sportsman of the Year

Badminton player David Hong was named Young Sportsman of the Year.

It was a close run thing in the Young Sportsman of the Year category where City of Derby badminton player David Hong, of Allestree, got the nod after winning a European Under-15 Junior Championships bronze medal in mixed doubles.

Taking the runner-up spots were Bonsall and Derbyshire Dales cross country mountain biker Cameron Orr, who competed for Great Britain at the World Championships, and Ambaston and Erewash hockey starlet Gareth Griffiths, who won the England Hockey Association Cup with his Premier League team Beeston Hockey Club.

David said: "My coach didn't tell me I had been nominated until close to the event, so it was quite a surprise to find out. I was really happy to know I would be coming to this event and be around all these great sportspeople.

"It's great to go on and win it. I think the European result that I am really proud of is what swung it for me."
