Francis Turner - Chesterfield College

Sport is a big part of everyday life for Francis Turner and, as a volunteer, he is also working hard to help other young people become more active.

The 18-year-old is currently studying for an NVQ 3 in Sport Development at Chesterfield College, and spends one day a week on work placement with the sport development team at Chesterfield Borough Council.

Along with many of his course mates he volunteers whenever he can, giving his time to regular sports sessions as well as one-off events.

This includes weekly football coaching sessions at Queen’s Park Sports Centre with pupils from a local school, which aim to get young people active and working as part of a team.

Francis is also involved in setting up and running a Mini Olympics tournament for pupils from a local primary school, introducing children from reception through to year 6 to events such as javelin, shot putt, relays, speed bounce and standing high jump.

He has previously been involved in festivals and tournaments for tag rugby, football and kwik cricket, and will be volunteering as a steward at the Race for Life in Chesterfield in July.

Francis said: “I volunteer whenever I can. I enjoy getting out and getting active and coaching is fun. I also enjoy seeing the kids getting active and being part of that.”
