The 40-year-old police officer coaches at Killamarsh Juniors Cricket Club, fitting in sessions around his shifts, and says seeing the young players improve is a great reward.
He joined the club three seasons ago after working for several years in Bermuda and America, and after helping the club win promotion to the Nottinghamshire Premier League decided to get involved with the junior team.
Andrew said: “After moving up to the Premier League the way forward was to get the kids involved. I had always wanted to get involved in coaching and as there was only one coach doing that role I decided to help.”
Andrew now coaches around 20 young people on a voluntary basis.
He is also looking to add to his Level Two coaching qualifications so that he can do some voluntary coaching within schools with the aim of attracting more players to the club.
He said: “Whenever I’m available I’m there. I have always liked to see the younger players coming through, and just seeing a kid improving gives me as much pleasure as taking wickets myself.
“Cricket for me now is a way of staying fit, as much as I love the game, but I get more out of playing in a team with the kids and helping them during a game.
“It is better to be with them in a game and if they try something and it doesn’t work out you can be there to mentor them.”
