Tom Robinson - Kickboxing
Hi, my name is Tom Robinson and I am part of the Great Britain squad for karate and kickboxing. In February I went to Doncaster to trial out for the GB team once more. First we had to do an hour’s worth of fitness which was absolutely tiring. We had to do press-ups, sit-ups, burpes, tuck jumps, running squats all the way up to 100 and all the way back down to 0.
Then we started, firstly I did kickboxing and there were about 20 people in my category but I got put with a 6ft 4 15-year-old but I came through. After the kickboxing I had to fight in karate style.
After the first trial came another held in the same place. Thankfully there was no fitness because the head coach had to be at a world title fight so he had to cut it short. We started with karate this time. The kickboxing side was a lot harder this time around, first I had to fight a person from Sleaford, using most of my skills I was a clear winner and had to go on and fight in another 5 more fights, at the end of the day we all got together and had a mini tournament.
At the moment I have been helping my coach teach karate and kickboxing for the last four months at Park Road Primary School, Shirebrook, New Houghton Community Centre, and now at Shirebrook Welfare.
As well as training for Great Britain (Womma World Games in Ireland in August), I am training for my 1st dan in karate (black belt). Also I am waiting to take my cadet leader exam and working on a demonstration for the club at Warsop Carnival in July.
