University of Derby Sportsperson of the Year

Donna Kellogg
Badminton (Derby City)
Competed at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and is Number one in the English National rankings at both mixed and ladies badminton doubles.

Runner-up:

Ross Davenport
Swimming (Amber Valley)
Swam three events at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and broke the British record twice as part of the GB men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team.

University of Derby Disabled Sportsperson of the Year

Jon Hall
Wheelchair Basketball (Chesterfield/North East Derbyshire)
Won a bronze medal at the 2008 Paralympics as part of Great Britain’s wheelchair basketball team.

Runner-up:

David Ellis
Swimming (Amber Valley)
Competed at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing where he swam in six events and qualified for the final in the Men's 200m IM and Men's 100m Breaststroke.

University of Derby Junior Sportsman of the Year

Liam Pitchford
Table Tennis (Chesterfield/North East Derbyshire)
Won a bronze medal at the European Youth Championships and is part of the British Table Tennis Federation’s 2012 development group.

Runner-up:

Tom Bishop
Triathlon (Derby City)
Won the Junior European Cup duathlon race at Holten Holland where he was the youngest competitor.

University of Derby Junior Sportswoman of the Year

Ellie Koyander
Freestyle Moguls Skiing (Derbyshire Dales)
Great Britain’s Number one freestyle moguls skier and three times British Champion.

Runners-up:

Alice Sharp
Hockey (Amber Valley)
Won a silver medal at the European Youth Nations Championships as part of the England U16 hockey team.

Emma Smithurst
Swimming (Amber Valley)
Won a gold medal in the 400IM at the Tri-Nations Cup and a silver in the 200IM, and is a member of the London 2012 elite athlete training programme.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service Junior Disabled Sportsperson of the Year

Ricky Blampied
Gymnastics (Derby City)
Represented Great Britain at the Special Olympics World Games in Shanghai, winning two gold medals and five silvers.

Wheelchair Basketball (High Peak)
Competed at the European Junior Championships as part of the Great Britain U22 wheelchair basketball squad.

Derbyshire Sport Veteran Sportsperson of the Year

Liz Godfree
Orienteering (Derbyshire Dales)
World Champion in the W60 sprint category of the World Masters Orienteering Championships.

Gillian Henshaw
Cycling (Amber Valley)
Won the Veterans National 30-mile Time Trial Championship.

Derbyshire County Council Team of the Year

Derventio eXcel Swim Squad
Derby City
The winning Senior Championship Team 2008.

Runner-up:

Belper Ladies Hockey Club U18 Girls Team
Amber Valley
U18 National Cup Champions for a second year.

Derbyshire 2012 Junior Team of the Year

Belper Ladies Hockey Club U16 Indoor Team
Amber Valley
Retained the Indoor National Cup Champions title.

The winning Youth Championship Team 2008.

Derby County Football Club Club of the Year

Dronfield Town Football Club
Chesterfield/North East Derbyshire
The club has grown to a total of 30 boys, girls and adult teams, and is run on a purely voluntary basis by nine honorary officers and 40 team managers and coaches, all who give up many hours of their free time.

Team Leader/Head Coach (doubles) of the GB badminton squad at the 2008 Olympics.

Derbyshire County Cricket Club Community Coach of the Year

Wayne Griffiths
Football (Amber Valley)
Launched weekly disability football sessions at Codnor Boys Football Club in addition to many other duties.

Coached Whaley Thorn’s U9 Football Club to win the League Knockout Cup.

Has performed a wide variety of roles for the good of young people in Derbyshire for many years.

President of Derbyshire Netball, who has made a significant voluntary contribution to the sport spanning four decades.

Was selected as one of four Young Ambassadors from across England to visit Maine, USA to look at the structure for PE, sport and volunteering.

Given more than 500 hours of voluntary service to sport and acted as a Derbyshire Ambassador.

Special Award for Outstanding Achievements in 2008

David Brailsford
Cycling (Erewash)

The award was presented in recognition of the role David played in the British Cycling team’s success in Beijing, which saw them bring home 14 medals in all, including eight gold medals.

The team had previously topped the medal table at the World Track Cycling Championships in Manchester, taking nine of 18 gold medals available.
