Successful International Sailor to Coach Derbyshire Youth
Article by Mike Haynes - Derbyshire Youth Sailing
John Ironmonger, a successful sailor at UK, European and World events in the exciting 5o5 class boat, is to provide racing coaching to Derbyshire Youth Sailors at their series events and during special training days. John, who has sailed since he was 7 years of age, has enjoyed considerable success in achieving placings as high as 7th in the World 5o5 championships and 1st in the UK Inlands and Europa Cup.
John who lives now in Whatstandwell, Derbyshire and continues to sail competitively at events mainly on the South coast, has determined to put something back into sailing in recognition of the enjoyment he has had in competing at such a high level in the sport. As well as being a highly skilled sailor, John has been a recognised national RYA coach and has coached the 5o5 Class National Squad.
Derbyshire Youth Sailing’s Training Co-ordinator, Mike Haynes commented “In just a couple of events where John has come to see DYS sailors in action, he has already started to make a difference to our sailors capabilities. He will definitely raise the standard our sailors can achieve and hopefully this will encourage other young Derbyshire sailors to come along to DYS events and training sessions, or maybe for non-sailors to start sailing at their local Derbyshire club.”
Derbyshire Youth Sailing Chairman, Roger Britton noted “We are very pleased that John is generously committing his time to putting something back into the sport from which he has gained so much himself. We know that the young sailors will benefit tremendously from his experience.”
