Elliot Banks

Derbyshire Youth Sailing Series Champions

After nine events over the year since March, the overall winner of the Derbyshire Youth Sailing series 2005, Elliot Banks, (15) secured the win in his Laser Radial with one event to go. He is a member at Carsington Sailing Club and lives in Buxton. The lead in the competition has changed several times during the year as the sailors have had both good and bad events or been unable to compete because of other racing sailing commitments. The competition is run in two sections split between Seniors and Juniors based on school attendance. In the Junior competition there have again been several leaders and the result was not decided until the final event. Callum Lambourn (10) followed up his recent win in the National Regatta Fleet End of Season event by achieving the Junior Series champion in his Optimist dinghy. Callum is a member at Swarkestone Sailing Club and lives in Alvaston. The series, which normally has ten events, one at each of the ten sailing clubs in Derbyshire, lost one event because one the reservoirs had insufficient water for sailing to go ahead in the middle of the summer. The sailors range in age from just six years old to eighteen years old and sail in a wide variety of dinghies, both single and double handed. Clive Robinson, DYS Event Officer said ?This years series has had over 90 sailors competing and our average number of entries at each of the events has increased over last year which is very pleasing. We would be delighted to welcome even more club youth sailors to compete in the county championship youth series next year.
