Derbyshire Youth Sailing Raises Funds
The Toyota Suite of Derby County Pride Park Stadium was the venue last week for a successful Sportsman’s Dinner on the evening of St Patrick’s Day. Local celebrity goalkeeper and still England’s most capped player, Peter Shilton was the guest of honour. An auction of rare and unique items, together with prize draws and fun competition raised an impressive and much needed £3,500 for Derbyshire Youth Sailing.
Dame Ellen MacArthur, the only Honorary Life Member of DYS, was not able to attend the dinner as she is taking a well earned rest following her successful record breaking solo, non-stop circumnavigation. Dame Ellen did send an encouraging message that was read out on the night and also donated autographed items for the fund raising auction.
Over 100 guests were entertained not only by Peter Shilton’s fascinating insights into the world of football and tales of the man-management skills of the late, great, Brian Clough but also by local comedian Ronnie Stewart. This first Sportsman’s Dinner for the benefit of DYS, included in the auction some sailing heritage items salvaged from the refurbishment of HMS Victory in this the bicentenary year of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
Derbyshire Youth Sailing Chairman, Roger Britton said “I believe that a thoroughly good night was enjoyed by our guests and we are very grateful to all those who donated auction items to help us raise funds for Derbyshire Youth Sailing. Most of all we are very grateful to the businesses and guests who dug deep into their pockets to help support local youth sailors.”
