Disability Athletics
The regional Disability Forum has now met on two occasions.
The main priorities for Winter 06/07 will be:
- to provide opportunities for coaches within the region to gain experience and grow in confidence in relation to coaching athletes with a disability.
- to identify clubs that could act as lead clubs for disability athletics within each county.
- to provide coaching opportunities for athletes in the East Midlands to progress to the Disability Sport England Junior Championships on the 7th and 8th July and then on to the UK Schools Games in August.
- to encourage all County Associations to provide opportunities for athletes with a disability to compete within their county championships.
Practical sessions covering aspects such as how to use a throwing chair, how to use a sports wheelchair, how to guide an athlete as well as an explanation of the competition pathway for disabled athletes will be integrated into County Coaching days in oder to enable the above to happen.
We are lucky that we have several World Class athletes with a disability in the region and it is expected that they will be fully involved as role models within the region.
