Young people have a "wheelie" great time in Grindleford

40 young people descended on Grindleford on Wednesday evening to sample a taste of extreme sports as part of the local carnival celebrations.

Aged between 5 and 16, they were initiated into the art of ‘street sport’ with tips provided by Bolsover Mobile Extreme Wheels on skateboarding, bmx biking and roller skating.

The experts advised them on the ins and outs of jumps, stunts and skating tricks as they experienced the latest urban sports.

The event was organised to raise awareness of the ‘Active Grindleford’ programme, which is being developed by the Sport, Youth and Community Project Group. The project kicked off with the recent completion of the impressive floodlit multi-use games area, designed to develop sport within the local community.

Adults and young people were interviewed throughout the course of the evening to find out their views and aspirations relating to the role of sport in the village.

Alan Davies, of the Sport, Youth and Community Group said: “Carnival Week is always popular but this year was even more successful with the extra buzz provided by the team at Bolsover Mobile Extreme Wheels. The event was a real hit with the young people and we would like to encourage more activities like this in the future.”
