Derbyshire Dales Youth Games Event
Derbyshire Dales District Council held a celebration evening on 29 October at Wirksworth Leisure Centre for everyone involved with the squad that represented the Derbyshire Dales at this summer’s Derbyshire Youth games.
The Dales’ squad was made up of 15 teams, the highest number of all of the Districts taking part. Participants were selected and trained through trials, festivals and coaching courses and the hard work of all those involved certainly paid off.
Derbyshire Dales did extremely well, winning two events - Boys’ Hockey and Girls’ Tag Rugby - and coming second in Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics, Girls Cricket, and Mixed Tennis. Third place was achieved in Girls’ Football Years 5 and 6, Girls Hockey and Netball. In fact in every sport the Dales teams entered, they came fifth or higher. Although no overall winner of the Games is announced, Derbyshire Dales notched up an excellent record on the day and picked up the overall Fair Play trophy – for the second time. This was achieved after the squad was awarded the highest number of points by opponents and officials for their attitude, behaviour and sportsmanship.
All participants in the games received certificates and a sports bag at the celebration evening and Councillor Janet Goodison, Chairman of the District of Derbyshire Dales made two additional presentations, one to the organisers, Derbyshire and Peak Park Sport and Recreation Forum and one to a Youth Team leader, for winning the Fair Play award.
Councillor Goodison commented, “The team is a credit to the District. I congratulate them and their supporters and thank them for all of their hard work leading up to the games, and on the day. The Youth Games are the result of teachers, team members, coaches and volunteers all working together with the Derbyshire and Peak Park Sport and Recreation Forum and the District Council’s Sports Development to increase and improve opportunities for young people to take part in sport.”
