NEW FACILITIES

This new £8 million pound facility has been funded mainly by the sale of land & in the use of the Councils own capital reserves with the project being ten years in the making. Rather than choose a like for like replacement of facilities when Middlecroft Leisure Centre closed down, the Council decided to make some substantial improvement to the range of services when designing the Healthy Living Centre (HLC). The new centre will be operated by the Borough Council.

NEW LOCATION

The facility will be located at the site of the soon to be demolished Barlow Road flats. The site is ideal for leisure provision as it is placed on the main arterial road with heavy traffic both leaving and entering Chesterfield using the A619. Equally important will be the access to the Centre by both pedestrian and local bus users. Many customers will now be able to travel to the Centre without changing buses and walk straight into the building.

REGENERATION

One of the obvious benefits to the local community will be the impact the Centre makes on the economy with over 70 jobs being created as a result of the project. The Centre will also be in an area with other leisure provision such as the community facilities provided by Staveley Town Council such as the Speedwell Rooms and the Staveley Miners Welfare's football and cricket facilities. It is hoped that the new Centre will act as a catalyst for the local economy and attract other leisure operators to the area. The HLC is located strategically at the East of Chesterfield only 10 minutes away from Junction 30 of the M1 and will serve the communities of Barlborough and Bolsover along with the residents of Chesterfield. Visitor numbers are expected to be high with people travelling from outside of the area drawn to using both the 11m climbing wall and the indoor soft play arena.

Wow Factor

The Centre 'shop front' will automatically attract people, with lighting at night enhancing the branding and the large windows, giving an electric blue buzz to the building.

A central feature to the building behind the internal glazed wall will be the 25m swimming pool, one of the very few in the region with a movable platform to make it as flexible for as many different user groups as possible. Again lighting will play an important role in creating the right mood as lights are positioned in the pool providing a more relaxed environment at certain set times.

The range of facilities are designed with families in mind to bring together sport and leisure opportunities. On the ground floor, facing Market Street, will be the indoor soft play arena capable of accommodating 75 active children at any one time. With the popularity of computer games and DVD's children are becoming more sophisticated and with this in mind the soft play arena has been designed to stimulate and above all excite. This is especially important when children's fitness levels are declining and obesity increasing.

The 150 station fitness suite, health spa and dance studios to are key to the operation of the building. The Council wants to see all sections of the community using the facility especially those with chronic illness problems that are referred through the exercise referral scheme. There will be qualified, professional people on hand to prepare programmes and to give health advice. Also within this exercise area will be specialised equipment set aside for children to use on a course basis. Customers will be offered easy methods of payment using direct debit or be able to 'pay as you play'. One of the benefits of being a member will be that customers will be able to use both Queens Park Sports Centre and the facilities of the Healthy Living Centre.

Parents wishing to exercise will be able to leave their child in the care of professional staff in the 20 place crèche.
