Nominations open for Bolsover Sport Annual Sports Awards

If you know someone who has made an outstanding contribution to Sport in Derbyshire, now is the time to let them be recognised by nominating them for the Derbyshire Sports Awards 2008.

Nominations are open for the Bolsover Sport Annual Sports Awards, and the closing date is July 18^th. The Derbyshire Sports Awards, sponsored by the University of Derby, provide a way of recognising and celebrating the successes of local athletes and people involved in sport in Derby.

Awards will be given to people from all areas of sport, so if you know someone who has provided a service to sport for over five years, or know of a community hero in Bolsover, then get them nominated for the Bolsover Sport Annual Sports Awards by contacting Bolsover Sport on 01246 242335 or logging on to www.bolsover.gov.uk .

The winners will then go forward to the Derbyshire Sports Awards, where the winner and runner up for each category will be invited to attend the sensational final awards ceremony at the Derbyshire Sports Awards on 14^h November at Derby?s, Pride Park Stadium.

There are a variety of categories you can nominate in including: Sportsperson of the Year, Junior Disabled Sportsperson of the Year, Community Coach of the Year, Service to Sport Award and Team of the Year.

Winners of the Derbyshire Sports Awards could go through to the East Midlands Sports Awards and even to the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards. Previous winners of the University of Derby Sportsperson of the Year are representing Britain at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games:

Donna Kellogg was 2007 Sportsperson of the Year and has been selected for both Mixed and Women's doubles at the Olympics. Ross Davenport, 2006 Sportsperson of the Year is also going to Beijing to compete in both individual and relay freestyle swimming events.

Councillor Clive Moesby, Chair of Derbyshire Sport, said: "Sports Awards are a great way of recognising sporting success in the county from elite performers to dedicated coaches and volunteers, and we feel that it is important to highlight these achievements.

"The awards have been successful in showcasing gifted sportspeople and this year we are seeing previous Derbyshire Sports Awards winners competing at the Beijing Olympics. The nominations are now open, so if you know a sporting hero, this is an opportunity to let them shine."
