Young Athletes Shine in School Finals
Youngsters from twelve Amber Valley Primary Schools had the chance to compete for their school in sportshall athletics Grand Finals. Each school had run, bounced and thrown their way to the Final by winning their area competition in September.
The competitions, organised by Amber Valley Borough Councils Sports Development Unit, split competing schools according to their size.
The Final for large schools saw Swanwick Primary, St Johns CE Primary from Ripley, Coppice Primary from Heanor, and The Meadows Primary from Duffield competing for the annual shield. In a very closely fought competition at Charles Hill Sports Complex, Loscoe, Swanwick Primary emerged as the winning school, with The Meadows and St Johns schools close behind with Coppice taking fourth place. Swanwick continue their fine tradition in Sportshall athletics, having won the trophy in previous years.
New for 2004 was the introduction of Finals for the boroughs’ schools in the ‘medium’ and ‘small’ categories, where the size of each schools’ team is appropriate to their school size.
Taking the trophy in the medium-sized school category was Leys Junior School from Alfreton. Coming through strongly in the field events, they held off the challenge of Little Eaton, Breadsall and Heage schools.
In the small-sized schools competition Morley Primary school were clear winners in dominating both the relays and the field events. Turnditch, Ambergate and Mapperley schools fought it out for second, third and fourth places respectively.
Presentations to all winners were made by Mr Glynn Hartshorne, Mayor of Amber Valley.
