Council co-ordinates finalists at International Championships
Two members of the Council’s Sports Development team acted as co-ordinators at the 2004 Partially-Sighted World Football Championships.
Stuart Clarke and Gareth Buckley co-ordinated the Russian team’s activities during the event, which took place at the City of Manchester Velodrome between Saturday 11 December and Saturday 18 December 2004.
Stuart Clarke said: “The Championships were a unique training experience and it was amazing to be part of them. It was great to meet and befriend so many different people from all over the world. I learned a lot about the amount of effort required to stage such a large event and was able to experience some of Manchester’s superb sporting facilities and venues".
Stuart added: “The England team came sixth out of the twelve teams competing in the Championships. The Russian team, whose members we worked with, made it to the final but lost to the reigning champions Belarus. Sir Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat trick for England when they won the 1966 World Cup , attended the final and presented the trophies".
