The team, which consists of a Senior Competition Manager and five Competition Managers, is working with a range of partners, both locally, regionally and nationally, to support existing high quality competitions and to provide additional provision.

The Derbyshire Competition Manager team is part of the national programme funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and managed nationally by the Youth Sport Trust. Through a national network of 200 Competition Managers the aim is to create:

“A world class system for school aged competition that provides both opportunities for all young people regardless of their ability, and recognised pathways to develop their talents.”

Within Derbyshire the team has identified three key strands to their work, which will help to deliver this national vision:

  • Support and strengthen existing competitions and infrastructure
  • Work in partnership to provide new opportunities in competitive school sport
  • Enhance the communication of information surrounding competitive school sport

The Competition Managers are engaging with a range of key local partners to work on these three strands. A Derbyshire “High Quality School Competition Plan” has been developed, in consultation with local partners, to ensure that sustainable developments are put in place. This plan will provide the basis of the Competition Managers’ work for the three years to March 2011.

Each of the Competition Managers is responsible for a geographical area, of up to three School Sport Partnership areas. Localised plans, developed with local teachers, School Sport Partnerships and Area Schools’ Sports Associations, provide a work programme for each of the Competition Managers within their areas. These plans use the Derbyshire ‘High Quality School Competition Plan’ as their basis, but offer flexibility to meet the needs of local partners.

The work within local plans includes the planning and organisation of new competitive opportunities for local children, as well as plans to ensure the effective communication of information to schools. Competition Managers also collecting and collating data on all inter-school competitions within Derbyshire, enabling reports to be provided to schools and the School Sport Partnerships.

Following the Derbyshire Competition Review, undertaken through 2007, school sport competitions will be designed to fit with the competition frameworks, currently in place for 12 sports. These frameworks provide guidance on the appropriate competitions for young people and the scheduling of those competitions to ensure a calendar that enables more young people to compete and progress within competitive school sport.
