Progress on White Peak Loop – extension of Monsal Trail between Matlock and Rowsley
Derbyshire County Council has been leading on a government funded project, Pedal Peak ll, to improve cycle links both into and throughout the Peak District National Park.
One of the schemes is to extend the Monsal Trail from Bakewell down into Matlock, part of the vision of the White Peak Loop which aims to link the existing Monsal and High Peak Trails via Matlock in the south and Buxton in the north.
Since January, work has started in earnest on the ground to construct a new five-mile section of the route between Matlock and Rowsley.
The new trail follows the route of the former Matlock-Buxton Railway line as closely as possible and for most of the new section it will run alongside the Peak Rail Heritage Railway as well as going into the Whitworth Park at Darley Dale.
The County Council's own work teams (AllRoads) are building the route, with help from the County Council's engineering contractors, Aecom.
Most of the current work on the ground should be completed by the autumn and as well as improving the route alongside the railway another feature will include a 200m boardwalk through the area of the old railway sidings just south of Rowsley.
