Spotlight falls on Highfields as TV crew visit Olympic Dreams School

Highfields School in Matlock has come under the spotlight on TV’s BBC East Midlands Today, highlighting the school’s involvement in the BBC World Class Olympic Dreams project.

Highfields School is as an Olympic Dreams School, as part of a special project run by the BBC and the British Council in the run-up to the London Olympics in 2012.

It is twinned with St John Fisher College in Queensland, Australia, the former school of Olympic swimmer Emily Seebohm, who won gold at the Beijing Olympics, and pupils from both of the schools have been sharing information about their lives and culture with each other.

On Monday, January 23, a film crew from BBC East Midlands Today spent the morning with Highfields pupils who were in the pool to complete an Olympic Challenge and try and get as close to Emily’s swim times as they could.

The crew spoke to pupils, and to Jayne Allen from Highfields, about their experiences so far as part of the BBC World Class Olympic Dreams project.

The film was shown on Thursday, January 26 – Australia Day – when a host of other activities were also held at the Highfields School.

This included playing sports such as Aussie Rules Football, netball and cross country.

In December 2010 Highfields School was named as one of 45 schools chosen to be part of the BBC World Class Olympic Dreams project.

Teachers are supported in developing school-to-school partnerships and encouraging pupils to share creative work inspired by the London Olympics. The British Council – which connects classrooms in the UK with schools around the world – has partnered the winners with schools attended by athletes from around the world.
