Derbyshire to host East Midlands Boccia Tournament

Derbyshire is to host this year’s East Midlands Boccia Tournament.

The event will be held at the Lea Green Centre near Matlock on Sunday, October 24, and will see two competitions take place - a physical disability competition and a mixed learning disability and sensory competition.

Teams from Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire will compete in both contests, with each team comprising of players aged 19 and under.

The Derbyshire team has been selected by Derbyshire Sport Disability Sport Officer James Cook.

James said: “Boccia is a growing sport in the county, with several local clubs attended by young people each week.

“We are looking forward to welcoming teams from the rest of the East Midlands to what I’m sure will be a friendly but competitive day and a chance for some of Derbyshire’s best young boccia players to put their skills to the test.

“For many of the players it will be their first chance to represent the county at a tournament like this, and I’m sure they will do Derbyshire proud.”

Boccia is a fun, inclusive sport for all abilities. It is played from a seated position, and the aim of the game is to propel a set of coloured balls and position them closer to a white 'marker' ball than those of your opponent, similar to bowls.

The competition will take the form of a round robin competition, with a final and a 3rd and 4th place play off.

Each team will be mixed, with male and female players, and will consist of up to five players with three on court at any one time.

The East Midlands Boccia Tournament is held each October, and was held in Nottinghamshire last year and in Leicestershire in 2008.
