14 May 2010

A girl’s cricket team from Anthony Gell School took fourth place in the national final of The Lady Taverners U13 Indoor Schools Competition, having won through county and regional rounds.

Around 850 schools had competed nationally, with the best teams from around the country invited to take part in the national final at Lord’s Cricket Ground.

The Anthony Gell team faced a tough day of competition at Lord’s, and faced the eventual winners, Colston’s from Bristol, in their first match.

Anthony Gell girls batted very tentatively against some very good bowlers and were all out for 40 runs. Colston’s then went on to score 98 runs in their innings and win the match.

The girls then had a long break before their next match and were able to take a tour around Lord’s before playing three consecutive games against Shenfield, Appleby and Cathedral.

Anthony Gell won the first game against Shenfield.  Both teams scored 63 runs but Anthony Gell had lost less wickets so were the winners.

The next game against Appleby was very close but unfortunately Anthony Gell lost by one run. The girls then had to play Cathedral who had a very strong batting side and eventually lost the game by 44 runs.

Most of the girls play cricket at Wirksworth & Middleton Cricket Club, where the women and girls section has been running for ten years.
