Just two points separated the top two boys’ teams, with Belper School from Amber Valley winning through with 262 points and Lees Brook Community Sports College from Derby East just behind with 260 points. In third place was Brookfield Community School, from Chesterfield, with 256 points.

Meanwhile in the girls’ competition Kirk Hallam Community Technology College from Erewash pipped St Mary’s Catholic High School from Chesterfield to the post, finishing the competition on 285 points and 282 points respectively. Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School from North East Derbyshire took third place with 255 points.

The winning Boys and Girls teams will now progress to the Aviva Sportshall East Midlands Regional Final at Loughborough University next month.

This year the Aviva Sportshall Schools Programme includes a series of 42 County Finals with East Midlands Airport sponsoring this Derbyshire Final for a second year.

Around 150 Derbyshire school pupils competed at the East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Year 7 Sportshall Athletics Finals, which were held at Moorways Sports Centre in Derby on Tuesday 23 March.

Sportshall Athletics is traditional track and field events brought indoors, using specially adapted equipment, and pupils competed in 11 events including standing long jump, standing triple jump, shot and obstacle relays.

All ten Derbyshire districts were represented, with up to eight girls and eight boys in each team who had won their place in a series of district events.

Others schools which competed included West Park School, Shirebrook School, Highfields School, Littleover School, John Port School, New Mills School, Tibshelf School and Eckington School.

The event is part of the athletics competition framework for Derbyshire and was run on the day by Sportshall Associates.

Sportshall Athletics events are held across the UK, bringing young people together to experience the excitement and fun of athletics. Many of Great Britain’s athletics stars, including Olympic gold medallists Mark Lewis-Francis and Denise Lewis, participated in Sportshall events as youngsters.

The East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Year 7 Sportshall Athletics Finals is part of the East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Schools’ Athletics Championships, and follows the Year 5/6 final which was held on Tuesday 2 March.
