East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics Finals

Gayton Junior School from Derby West was the winning team at this year’s East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics Finals.

In the closest final ever, the team from Gayton Junior School took the winners’ trophy with 300 points – just four more points than closest rivals Denby and Herbert Strutt Primary Schools, representing Amber Valley, which finished in second place with 296 points.

In third place was the team from St Mary's Catholic Primary School, representing Chesterfield, who finished the competition with 268 points.

Around 200 talented young athletes from schools across Derbyshire competed at the event at Moorways Sports Centre in Derby, with teams having first won their place in a series of district events.

Sportshall Athletics is traditional track and field events brought indoors, using specially adapted equipment, and on the day pupils competed in 12 events including soft javelin, standing long jump, standing triple jump and obstacle relays.

Teams were made up of school pupils aged nine to 11, representing Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire, Amber Valley, Erewash, Derby East, Derby West, Derbyshire Dales, Bolsover, and High Peak.

The annual event, which was sponsored by East Midlands Airport for a second year, is part of the athletics competition framework for Derbyshire. The event was run by Aviva Sportshall Associates.
