In the lead up to The Games, the Torch Relay will travel the length and breadth of the country, and a bid to make sure Derbyshire is included in the route is currently being put together.

Representatives from the worlds of sport, business, culture and tourism will gather on Thursday 11 March for a workshop to discuss where within the county the Torch Relay should pass, and how best to engage communities across the county in the event.

Rory Slater, Derbyshire 2012 Legacy Co-ordinator, said: “Bringing the Torch Relay to Derbyshire would be a fantastic opportunity to showcase some of the uniqueness of Derbyshire.

“There is such enthusiasm within the county to play a part in The Games and this would provide a perfect opportunity to excite the whole of Derbyshire just a few weeks before the 2012 Games actually start.”

In the weeks leading up to the start of The Games the Torch Relay will spend a minimum of three days within the East Midlands.

Derbyshire’s bid to host a section of the Torch Relay will be submitted to the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) at the end of March.
