The winning Boys and Girls schools will progress to the Aviva Sportshall East Midlands Regional Final to be held at Loughborough University on 21 April.
This year the Aviva Sportshall Schools Programme will include a series of 42 County Finals with East Midlands Airport sponsoring this Derbyshire Final for a second year. The event will be held at Moorways Sports Centre on Tuesday 23 March.
Teams from Bolsover and Amber Valley took the winners’ trophies last year, and this year’s event looks set to be another close contest.
All ten Derbyshire districts will be represented, with up to eight girls and eight boys in each team who have won their place in a series of district events.
Sportshall Athletics is traditional track and field events brought indoors, using specially adapted equipment, and on the day pupils will compete in 11 events including standing long jump, standing triple jump, shot and obstacle relays.
Teams will be made up of school pupils representing Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire, Amber Valley, Erewash, Derby East, Derby West, South Derbyshire, Derbyshire Dales, Bolsover, and High Peak.
Among the schools competing are Lees Brook Community Sports College, Brookfield Community School, Kirk Hallam Community Technology College, Highfields School, Littleover Community School, Belper School and New Mills School.
Anna Thomson, Community Relations Manager at East Midlands Airport, said: "The Derbyshire Year 7 Sportshall Athletics Finals is always an exciting event that is fantastic fun for the competitors and spectators.
“East Midlands Airport is delighted to be supporting this event, and we wish all the teams the very best of luck.”
The event is part of the athletics competition framework for Derbyshire and will be organised on the day by Sportshall Associates.
Sportshall Athletics events are held across the UK, bringing young people together to experience the excitement and fun of athletics. Many of Great Britain’s athletics stars, including Olympic gold medallists Mark Lewis-Francis and Denise Lewis, participated in Sportshall events as youngsters.
The East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Year 7 Sportshall Athletics Finals is part of the East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Schools’ Athletics Championships, and follows the Year 5/6 final which was held on Tuesday 2 March.
