Playground to Podium, led by Sport England (in partnership with the English Federation of Disability Sport), the Youth Sport Trust and Paralympics GB, will help to create a clear and professional disability sport pathway from school sport, through to club participation and on to elite performance.
Derby City and Chesterfield School Sport Partnerships have held Identifying Ability Days within their partnerships as part of the talent identification process. Each partnership has identified between 10 and 15 athletes who will attend the County Athlete Assessment Days (CAAD) to be held on Wednesday, June 16 and Thursday, June 24 at Moorways Sports Complex.
The days will involve all athletes taking part in five sports identified through the Playground to Podium programme led by their own National Governing Body. These will be boccia (Boccia England), table tennis (English Table Tennis Association), football (Football Association led by Derbyshire County FA), athletics (UK Athletics) and wheelchair basketball (Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association).
There will also be a swimming event organised by the Amateur Swimming Association to be held at Alfreton Leisure Centre on Wednesday, June 30.
Each National Governing Body will identify talented athletes and invite them to become part of their NGB impairment specific pathway. For those athletes that are not identified to become part of the NGB pathway, the NGBs and partners involved will support them to identify their local sporting opportunities either in a sport specific or multisport setting. This will ensure that all athletes involved in the programme are provided with the opportunity to take part in sport in a community setting. This will support young disabled athletes to access the vision of all children and young people accessing the additional two hours of sport on top of their two hours high quality PE and one hour after school provision.
The days will be supported by all six NGBs, Derby City and Chesterfield School Sport Partnerships, Derbyshire Sport, Champion Sports Coaching and Development and a team of volunteers. For more information contact Emma Champion on (01298) 71431 / 07725 739 834 or via emma@elcsport.co.uk
