A total of 28 members of the Derbyshire Sports Leadership Academy – who between them have logged more than 5,000 hours of volunteering in sport over the past year – were invited to attend a celebration event at Alton Towers.

All of the young people have recorded more than 100 volunteering hours through the Leadership Academy, working within schools and the local community.

Rebecca’s volunteering work has included assisting on the Sky Living For Sport Project, which uses sport to help 11 to 16-year-olds improve their health, develop self-esteem and increase attainment and achievement.

A full list of volunteers and details of their volunteering work can be found below.

During the event at Alton Towers the young volunteers attended a presentation where they were welcomed by the newly-elected Chair of Derbyshire Sport, Cllr Carol Hart, before receiving certificates and Kukri sports clothing and accessories. Following the presentation they were given free entry to the theme park as a reward for their efforts.

Sarah Jones, Youth Sport Officer at Derbyshire Sport, said: “Derbyshire has a fantastic army of young volunteers who play an important role in inspiring others to become more active, and the dedication and enthusiasm that all these young people have shown is superb.

“Many sports activities and clubs rely on the work of volunteers and through the Derbyshire Sports Leadership Academy hundreds of young people have got involved and given up their time to help with regular sports sessions or one-off events.”
