A variety of sporting activities were held across the county, including Bolsover where events included a Year 5 Festival of Sport which involved more than 150 pupils from Tibshelf Cluster Primaries taking part in trampolining, table tennis, basketball, football, athletics and cricket.
A Year 2 Mini Olympics involving 138 pupils from feeder infant schools was also held, with pupils enjoying throwing and jumping events such as welly wanging, sponge throwing and long jump. They also took part in challenges including obstacle races and a jungle run which involved swinging on ropes, balancing along benches and climbing up apparatus.
Both events were co-ordinated by the Academy of Young Leaders from Tibshelf Community School.
Pupils and staff from Tibshelf Community School also took part in their annual Sports Day, which began with the ‘Bolsover Big Mile’.
To complete the week the sixth Festival of Sport celebrating Community Cohesion was held, attracted over 1,000 members of the community. Various demonstrations were performed from local clubs including kickboxing, gymnastics, dance, trampolining, rounders, cricket and football.
Meanwhile in the Derbyshire Dales, Highfields School ran numerous activities including a mass conga, and pupils from local primary schools took part in activities run by Derby Cycling, Deda Dance and Derwent Valley Orienteers.
Year 9 and Year 12 sports leaders also led a day of sports activities for Darley Dale Primary School, with activities such as athletics, rounders, tri golf, tennis, Frisbee, volleyball and cricket.
In North East Derbyshire National School Sport Week meant a focus on the Olympic and Paralympic values, and each day children were given the opportunity to try a new Olympic or Paralympic Sport as part of a series of playground challenges. Activities included handball, rhythmic gymnastics, sitting volleyball and boccia.
The Playground challenges were designed by Young Ambassadors, with each challenge targeting different primary age groups. An average of 14 schools and 1,800 young people took part each day.
The results were submitted interactively by participating schools each evening, and the winning school from each playground challenge was presented with an equipment bag of agility equipment the following day. Each young person taking part also received a participation certificate.
The week culminated in a celebration event where schools across North East Derbyshire simultaneously took part in the ‘Cha Cha Slide Dance’.
National School Sport Week was held from June 28 to July 2.
