Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe visits Derbyshire

Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe has paid a visit to Derbyshire to find out more about some of the sporting successes in the county.

The Minister visited Scropton Equestrian Centre in South Derbyshire before travelling to the new Etwall Leisure Centre to see the £7m site’s new regional badminton centre and sports facilities.

The Minister also heard about the Jog Derbyshire initiative and the Derbyshire Talented Athlete Fund, and met Jog Leader Donna Brassington and swimmer Chris Steeples, who is one of more than 100 beneficiaries of the Fund.

Mr Sutcliffe said: “It's always a pleasure to meet the committed people who work in community sport. I was very impressed with the staff and the excellent facilities at both Scropton Equestrian Centre and Etwall Leisure Centre.

“We have an unrivalled opportunity to become a more active nation in the run up to 2012 and beyond so it was great to meet the people in Derbyshire who are working hard to make sure this happens.”
