The awards have been launched jointly by the Derby Telegraph, BBC Radio Derby, Derbyshire Building Society, Derby City Council and Derby County Football Club, and ‘Unsung Sporting Hero’ is one of 14 categories to recognise local people who go out of their way to help others.
Nominations for the awards are currently being welcomed, ahead of the closing date of Friday 2 April.
Previous winners of the Unsung Sporting Hero Award have included Steve Redfern, who won the award for his work as a coach with the City of Derby Swimming Club in 2008, and Karnjit Khatkar, who won the same award in 2009 in recognition of his work to inspire young Asians in Derby to take up football and train to a professional level through his role as the secretary and youth academy director of the GAD Khalsa Sports Club.
