The Movement nominated for Sporting Oscar

16 February 2010

An innovative project to get girls more active has been short-listed for a major national award.

The Movement, a partnership between Derby County in the Community and Derby City Council’s b-active initiative, has reached the final stages of The Sport Industry Awards.

The Awards recognise and reward the best the sport business has to offer in marketing, PR, sponsorship, new media, publishing, advertising and design.

The Movement beat off strong competition to join five other esteemed projects from the biggest names in sport including Manchester United and Everton Football Clubs in The Community Programme Award category.

Tom Glick, Chief Executive of Derby County Football Club, said: “We are extremely proud of Derby County’s involvement in this excellent project and we continue to be an enthusiastic and engaged partner.

“The Movement is certainly worthy of the award and has shown what can be achieved in Derbyshire when talented and passionate people work together to tackle a particular issue.

“Without doubt we have started to make a positive impact on the health and fitness of teenage girls in the area, through inspirational and diverse methods.

“That is the truly great thing about The Movement; they have pushed the boundaries to achieve their goal.”

The winner will be announced at a star-studded ceremony on May 13 in London.

Councillor Joe Naitta, Cabinet Member for Leisure at Derby City Council, said: “The Movement has taken a creative approach to tackle high inactivity levels amongst teenage girls.

"The team has developed new ways to inspire girls who don’t do regular exercise to take part in dance, boxercise, pilates and other activities. We are delighted that its work is being recognised at the highest level.”

Launched in June 2009 to 11 to 16 year old girls, The Movement provides a website with an interactive game to teach the importance of regular exercise and healthy eating, activity tips, beauty and style advice.

Nearly 2,000 girls have become Movement members, getting their own card to access special areas of the website and discounts of Movement activities.

Around 450 girls have attended its Step Up 2 Dance sessions run at all Derby secondary schools and 209 entered the Rock Your Body Street Dance Challenge 2009.

Hundreds of girls have written features and shared style and exercise ideas in The Movement Magazine which goes out to all girls every quarter.

The Movement is funded by the Premier League and the Football Foundation. It is the result of research carried out by Derby City Council’s b-active initative in the City which found that, by the age of 15, 66 per cent of girls did not achieve the Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines for being active. The recommended level of exercise for children aged between 5 and 16 is one hour of moderate intensity (heart pumping, slightly sweating) physical activity every day.
