Around 200 talented young athletes from schools across Derbyshire will compete at the East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics Finals next week.
The annual event is being sponsored by East Midlands Airport for a second year and will be held at Moorways Sports Centre on Tuesday, March 2.
Teams representing ten districts will compete, with up to 15 girls and 15 boys in each team who have won their place in a series of district events.
Defending the title will be Amber Valley, which last year were victorious for the third year in a row. However last year’s final was the closest to date, with the team from Chesterfield just 20 points behind.
Sportshall Athletics is traditional track and field events brought indoors, using specially adapted equipment, and on the day pupils will compete in 12 events including soft javelin, standing long jump, standing triple jump and obstacle relays, which will test speed, coordination, agility and balance.
Teams will be made up of school pupils aged nine to 11, representing Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire, Amber Valley, Erewash, Derby East, Derby West, South Derbyshire, Derbyshire Dales, Bolsover, and High Peak.
Anna Thomson, Community Relations Manager at East Midlands Airport, said: "The Derbyshire Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics Finals is a great event, giving pupils an introduction to many track and field events.
“East Midlands Airport is proud to support local sporting events such as this, and we wish all the teams the very best of luck.”
