Amber Valley’s Tamara Armoush won the Senior Girls title for a second year at the East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Schools’ Cross Country Championships, as more than 600 Derbyshire school pupils braved the elements for a tough morning of racing.
Tamara, from Belper School, crossed the finish line ahead of Chesterfield’s Lori Marshall, from Chesterfield College, and Abbie Vernon, from St Mary’s High School, who were placed second and third respectively.
Emma Erskine, from the Derbyshire Dales, also took gold for a second year, winning the Intermediate Girls Championship this year after winning the Junior Girls event in 2009.
Emma, from Highfields School, took first place ahead of Derby East’s Rebecca Miller, from Chellaston School, who was second, and Kirsty Shipman from West Park School, who was third.
The East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Schools’ Cross Country Championships saw pupils racing over a variety distances over fields at Mount St Mary's College in Spinkhill on Saturday, February 6.
Athletes had qualified to take part after winning through Area Championships across the county, and almost every secondary school in the county was represented.
Other winners at the East Midlands Airport-sponsored event included Derby West’s Valeska Wills from Saint Benedict Catholic School, who won the Junior Girls Championship. In second place was Bolsover’s Emily Wass from Tibshelf School, and taking the bronze medal was North East Derbyshire’s Laura Goodwin from Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School. High Peak won the team prize.
In the Year 7 Girls race High Peak’s Libby Hallem, from Hope Valley College, took first place ahead of Isobel Purvis and Sophie Quince from the Derbyshire Dales, who were second and third respectively. Isobel is a student at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, while Sophie attends Lady Manners School. Derbyshire Dales was the winning team in the Year 7 Girls race.
Amber Valley’s Jethrow McGraw, from Belper School, won the Year 7 Boys race, beating High Peak’s Adam Roden, from St Philip Howard Catholic School, and Chesterfield’s Ryan Beale, from St Mary’s High School into second and third place respectively. Amber Valley was the winning team in the Year 7 Boys race.
The Junior Boys race was won by South Derbyshire’s Alex Benfield, from William Allitt School. Taking second place was the Derbyshire Dales’ George Tighe from Highfields School, and in third was Bolsover’s Harry Williams, from Tibshelf School. Erewash won the team prize.
The Intermediate Boys race saw the High Peak’s James Selvey, from Hope Valley College, take gold, and Bolsover’s Mike Williams, from Tibshelf School, win the silver medal. The bronze went to Derby West’s Christopher Williams from Derby Grammar School.
Meanwhile in the Senior Boys Championship the High Peak’s Kyle Fowler, from Buxton Community School, finished in first place, followed by Chesterfield’s Josh Moody, from Chesterfield College, who was second. In third place was Amber Valley’s Ben Connor from Swanwick Hall School.
The top three athletes and top three teams in each race were presented with medals by Derbyshire Schools’ Athletics Chair Liz Milne and Vice-Chair Lisa Palmer.
The top athletes in the junior, intermediate and senior championships will also be considered for a place in the Derbyshire team which will compete at the English Schools Championships at Heaton Park in Manchester on 20 March.
