Young dancers to celebrate skills

23 April 2010

More than 1,000 Derby school pupils are set to take part in a huge celebration of Dance at the Assembly Rooms. The ‘Celebration of Dance’ is organised by the Derby City School Sport Partnerships to give pupils involved in dance the opportunity to take demonstrate their talents in a professional setting.

The Festival takes place at the Assembly Rooms in Derby on Wednesday, April 28 and Thursday, April 29. Each day will start at 9.30am and finish at 12.30pm.

58 schools from across Derby have worked during recent months to perfect their performances for the festival. They will each perform a three minute routine watched by the other performing schools, as well as friends and family.

The performers range from 5 to 19 years of age.

Performances will take part in a wide range of styles of dance from street and contemporary through to jazz.

The Celebration of Dance is part of the national UDance programme, offering young people across the country the opportunity to participate in dance and to perform in public. Selected groups will later perform at the Derbyshire Youth Dance Platform Interface10 at Buxton Opera House on Monday, May 17, organised by Deda.

The Derby City School Sport Partnerships have been organising the Celebration of Dance since 2004.  It is one of the largest annual events organised by the Partnerships to enable young people across Derby to participate in high quality PE and School Sport.
