Triple crown for Anthony Gell girls

23 April 2010

Pupils and teachers at Anthony Gell School are celebrating three times over after U14 girls teams from the school won County Championship titles in three different sports.

The talented girls in years 7, 8 and 9 have won the county honours in basketball, indoor cricket and hockey.

Head of PE Tessa Mitchell said: “Considering we are only a small school with just over 600 pupils, we are very fortunate to have such a pool of talented youngsters.”

She also attributes much of the success to the close partnership working between the school, local clubs and coaches.

Several of the youngsters have been members of two of the teams and two girls have played in all three sports, with Nina Smedley captaining all three squads.

Head teacher David Baker was so impressed with the success of the girls that a special celebratory assembly was held, and many other students in years 7, 8 and 9 who hold county, regional and national titles in a wide variety of sports were also honoured.
