The project, which will involve villages in Amber Valley, Bolsover, Derbyshire Dales, North East Derbyshire, High Peak and South Derbyshire, is set to bring new opportunities for residents to take part in a wide range of sports clubs, classes and events.
The project has been developed by the Community Sports Trust, a new social enterprise (not for profit company), which has been set up to support grassroots sport across Derbyshire. It has launched the Village Games logo and opened the application process for six full-time Village Games Co-ordinators, and a full-time Coach and Volunteer Development Officer.
Hayley Lever, Project Manager for the Village Games, said: “Getting the right people in these seven roles is the absolute key to the success of the Village Games project. We want people who have a passion for community sport, skills and experience in organising sports activities and experience of developing new volunteers. We want people who are passionate about sport in Derbyshire, who will care deeply about the success of the project, and will work towards the sustainability of the Village Games beyond the three years of funding.
“The sports on offer will be a lot of fun but there will also be a competitive edge to some – and there will be something for everyone.
“We want to harness the excitement of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, by offering the right activities, delivered by the right people in the right places to increase participation.”
The project delivery will begin in early July. District Council Sports Development teams are identifying up to ten villages per year who will benefit from the support of these co-ordinators.
