All eight are also being given free access to Derbyshire Dales District Council’s swimming pools and fitness gyms to help them with their training as they bid to reach the top in their chosen sport.
Wrestlers Katy Colebourne and Jack Lawley, rugby players James Thraves and Thomas Farenden and kickboxer Molly Slifkin have each received a bursary from the Derbyshire Talented Athlete Fund, together with hockey player Sophie Hawkins, wushu champion Sam Mak and Taekwondo’s Alison Gartside.
A bursary has been awarded to each of the athletes to help with training and competition costs as they are currently competing for England or Great Britain or have the potential to do so within 18 months.
Derbyshire Dales District Council and other local authorities and businesses, including Derbyshire County Council, give financial support to the Fund, which is managed by Derbyshire Sport.
Cllr David Barker, Chairman of the District of Derbyshire Dales, met the athletes and congratulated them on their successes at the Town Hall in Matlock. Also attending were Cllr Clive Moesby, chair of Derbyshire Sport, and Cllr Judith Twigg from Derbyshire County Council.
World, European and National junior wushu champion Sam Mak said: “It’s tremendous to receive support towards training space and facilities, which can be expensive.”
