56 Derbyshire coaches to share in funding boost

22 April 2010

A total of 56 coaches have been offered a share of £5,000 to help them gain new skills and qualifications, thanks to the Derbyshire Sport Coach Bursary Fund.

Each of the coaches has been offered a share of a £5,196 pot, which will enable them to make a significant difference to sport in Derbyshire.

Among those receiving a bursary are seven coaches from Amber Valley, 11 from South Derbyshire, six from North East Derbyshire, one from Bolsover, nine from Erewash, three from the Derbyshire Dales, nine from Chesterfield, seven from Derby City and three from the High Peak.

Coaches receiving a bursary will be training to work in a diverse range of sports including rugby, basketball, dodgeball, football, tennis, squash, table tennis, boxing, gymnastics trampolining, cricket, running, canoeing, exercise to music, swimming and hockey.

Thanks to the funding 34 recipients will work towards assistant coaching qualifications (Level 1), 14 will undertake Level 2 qualifications, one will undertake a Level 3 qualification and seven will receive other coach education.

The training will give the coaches an increased knowledge and confidence in the sports they work in, enabling them to deliver high quality sessions to sports people across Derbyshire.

The bursary fund encourages and supports the personal and professional development of coaches working across Derbyshire, through subsidising the costs of coach education.

Allison Nolan, Coaching Derbyshire Co-ordinator, said: “Once again we have been able to award more than £5,000 in one quarter to coaches in Derbyshire and we are delighted that this money will benefit a diverse range of sports. We welcome applications from those who work or would like to work to encourage and improve the sporting abilities of others through schools, colleges or community clubs on a paid or voluntary basis.”

Bursaries can be used to help cover the cost of a course, and can also be used to help meet related travel and accommodation costs or to gain new qualifications or skills through observation and mentoring.

Applications for the next round of funding are now being accepted and must be received by April 30.

Coaches can apply for up to 50 per cent of the total cost of training, up to a maximum of £200.

Priority is given to people live in Derbyshire or who are actively coaching in Derbyshire and applications are particularly welcome from women, black and ethnic minorities, disabled people and those who are unemployed, who are under represented in coaching.
