Young people were given a taste of how fun athletics can be, when Shipley Country Park played host to the East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Special Schools’ Outdoor Athletics Festival.
Around 25 pupils from schools across Derbyshire took part, and got the chance to try each of four events – a 75m sprint, 600m run, vortex javelin throw and standing long jump.
Among those who joined in the fun were pupils from Ashgate Croft School in Chesterfield, Callow Park College in Wirksworth and Brackenfield School in Long Eaton.
The East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Special Schools’ Outdoor Athletics Festival was based on the new athletics concept QuadKids, which is specifically designed to be inclusive, quick and fun.
It was organised by Derbyshire Quadkids Coordinator Julie Feeney, in partnership with Derbyshire Sport.
The Festival was sponsored by East Midlands Airport, which is supporting the Derbyshire Schools’ Athletics Championships for a second consecutive year.
Leonie Parkin, Community Relations Executive at East Midlands Airport, said: “The Derbyshire Special Schools’ Outdoor Athletics Festival is a great event, giving pupils the opportunity to try a variety of athletics disciplines.”
