Schools from across Derbyshire fielded teams which competed at the event held at Power League, Derby, on Tuesday, December 15, after winning their way through local competitions.

The Year 7 Girls final was won by the team from Chellaston School after playing in a three teamed final with William Allitt School and Tupton Hall School. Chellaston School won both games.

The Year 7 Boys final was won by a team from Ecclesbourne School, who beat Frederick Gent School in the final 1-0.

Tupton Hall School were the champions in the Year 8 Girls final, beating Mill Hill 4-0, and in the Year 8 Boys final Friesland School lost out to Shirebrook School, with Shirebrook scoring in extra time after a 2-2 deadlock.

Derbyshire Sport Competition Manager Phil Basterfield said: “Once again the futsal tournament was a great success and gave many pupils their first chance to represent their school at sport. Last year was our first county futsal competition and even more schools took part this year, with 50 teams in the final, so the competition was even tougher.”

Futsal is a South American game similar to football which is played indoors with a low bounce ball.

It is the format of Small Sided Football that is recognised and supported by FIFA and UEFA with World and European Championships for club and National Teams.

The name 'Futsal' simply combines the Spanish words for ‘Hall’ – Sala and ‘Football’ – Futbol into Futsal. It is a five-a-side game, played with hockey sized goals and a smaller ball with a reduced bounce.

As a small-sided game, players are constantly placed in situations where they must receive or play whilst under pressure or in confined spaces and it places considerable demand on technique, movement, tactical awareness and fitness.
