South Derbyshire school officially opens as a specialist sports college

14 October 2008

Derbyshire Olympic badminton player Donna Kellogg was on hand to officially open Granville Community School as a specialist sports college on Friday October 3.

She joined staff, pupils and invited guests for a celebration of the school gaining sports college status, which rewarded pupils for their hard work in raising some of the £50,000 needed for the application process.

The day also aimed to raise the profile of Granville as a Sports College and improve links with local sports clubs.

Olympian Donna gave a demonstration and a coaching session to Year 7 pupils from the school and Year 6s from partner Primary Schools.

All pupils also took part in two sport taster sessions during the school day, choosing from KMX go-karts, street dance, archery, laser combat, ultimate frisbee, climbing wall, gamercise, concept 2 rowing, street basketball, outdoor volleyball, dance mats, sumo suits and giant games.

All other lessons focused on developing cross curricular links between sport and other subjects within the school, with a sports theme.

Director of Sport Richard Tilley said: “We are committed to raising aspirations through PE and school sport to develop a healthy body and healthy mind to build confidence and a positive mindset for success in life.

“This was an exciting opportunity for pupils to meet an Olympian, Donna Kellogg, to see badminton at an elite level and aspire to reach their personal best.”

Local sports club representatives were invited to the event as well as dignitaries from a variety of organisations and businesses that have supported the school in gaining its new status.

It will now work to develop further partnerships with sporting organisations and outside agencies.

Activities held on the day were supported by South Derbyshire District Council’s Sports Development Team, Rosliston Forestry Centre activity coaches, South Derbyshire School Sports Partnership, Nadia Jane School of Dance and basketball coach Stedroy Baker.
