Conference prepares Young Ambassadors for leadership role

6 October 2008

Around 140 young people gathered for the Young Ambassador Conference held in Derby, where they were joined by double Olympic medallist Rebecca Romero.

Rebecca, (28), became the first British woman to win medals in two different summer Olympic sports when she won cycling gold in Beijing after clinching a rowing silver in Athens four years ago.

In Derby she met Young Ambassadors from Derbyshire and beyond who had been specially selected by their School Sport Partnerships either because of their strong sporting talent or their commitment to sports leadership and volunteering.

They attended workshops led by Olympians and Paralympians to prepare them for their two-year roles which will see them working as role models in schools and local communities.

The Derby event, at Pride Park Stadium, was one of six Young Ambassador Conferences taking place across the country, with others held in York, Oxford, Manchester, Exeter and London.

Now in its third year, the Young Ambassador programme - managed by the Youth Sport Trust - has received official recognition from the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games through its London 2012 Inspire Mark.

Each Young Ambassador will help build on the excitement created by the 2012 Games by championing the Olympic and Paralympic values, sport, PE and a healthy lifestyle to other youngsters.
