Kitbag Heroes - giving communities a sporting chance

25 November 2008

Famous faces from the world of sport were at Derbyshire County Cricket Ground on Friday, November 7 to celebrate the launch of Kitbag Heroes, the exciting new project from the Social Enterprise Team at Spirita Ltd.

The project was developed by Spirita Ltd in association with Derbyshire Sport, Bolsover District Council, Derby City Council, PricewaterhouseCoopers and has recently won funding from Sport England to help establish the model.

Kitbag Heroes harnesses the power and passion of sport to change lives for the better by challenging local organisations to make a positive impact on local communities.

Ross Davenport and Leon Taylor, members of Team GB’s 2008 Olympic and Paralympics squad, were in attendance, along with Derbyshire dignitaries and members of the local business community to show their support.

Kitbag Heroes is an innovative solution that addresses community sports needs and opportunities.

A showcase of various sporting displays took place throughout the event including a freestyle football demonstration by 19- year-old John Whetton, which involves keeping the ball off the ground by juggling with the feet, knees, shoulders and head. John, who is from Alvaston, has been chosen to represent the UK in the World Freestyle Championship in Sao Paula, Brazil later this month.

The event was a huge success with numerous organisations requesting further information about the project and how they can get involved.

If you know of a community group or individual in Derbyshire who may be looking for help with a sports project, then let the Kitbag Heroes team know. Do you know a club that needs a coach? Are there young athletes who need support and encouragement in their training? Kitbag Heroes can marry up the need in the community with the volunteers from the business world.

Give Mike Umphray or Louise Wheatley a call on 01159 248589 or 01159 248584 and see if they can help.
