Derbyshire school pupils challenged to 'Run to Beijing' for National School Sport Week

The week will be a celebration of the outstanding work that is being done within school sport across the country and to increase the profile of school sport.

As part of the programme of activities within Derbyshire, children in the county’s primary, infant and junior schools are being challenged to ‘Run to Beijing’.

This interactive, virtual challenge offers schools the opportunity to promote school sport, take part in inter-school competition and help Derbyshire collectively reach the venue for this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games.

By combining the distances covered by Derbyshire’s school children during a one-minute challenge it will be possible to measure whether they can collectively reach Beijing. If every Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 child in Derbyshire takes part in the challenge during NSSW it will require an average of approximately 125 metres per pupil to achieve the 8,000km to Beijing.

Whilst the collective challenge is to reach Beijing, the challenge, organised by the Derbyshire Competition Manager team, is also a virtual competition for all primary schools.

By taking part in the ‘Run to Beijing’ challenge schools will also be entering their pupils and the school into a virtual inter-school competition. A special section will be set up on the Derbyshire Sport to enable schools to enter the distance covered by each pupil during their one-minute challenge. The average distances covered by schools can then be calculating to provide final results across the county. Using average distances will enable small schools to compete with larger ones.
