Get Active in the Forest nominated for National Lottery Award

18 June 2008

South Derbyshire District Council's Get Active in the Forest Scheme has been nominated for a National Lottery Award.

The Awards are an annual search to find the UK's favourite Lottery-funded projects and recognise the difference that those projects have made, and Get Active in the Forest has made the shortlist in the Best Sports Project category.

Get Active in the Forest focuses on walking, cycling and outdoor activities, as well as conservation and is based at Rosliston Forestry Centre, which has been re-developed into an outdoor activity hub for the district.

The re-development was funded by The National Lottery, and included a new entrance, a meeting room and a games room, as well as additional tracks and trails for visitors to explore.

The project was established in response to a consultation with local residents and young people and has provided many local people with an opportunity to improve their health and fitness, amidst the surrounding countryside.

Lottery funding has helped buy equipment for a wide range of activities such as archery, woodland laser combat, tai chi and cycling, as well as constructing three fully accessible timber cabins enabling disabled visitors to take part in physical activities.

Get Active in the Forest has attracted around 8,000 new participants and helped improve the health of local people by increasing their activity levels.

It is competing against nine other projects in the Best Sports Project category for the chance to win an Award and a £2,000 prize.

The first round of public voting closes on July 4. The three projects in each category with the most votes will then progress to the final round of public voting.

Projects were shortlisted by an independent judging panel.

This year, the Awards are in seven categories. The first round of public voting runs from June 16 to July 4.

The three projects in each category with the most votes will progress to the final round, which will run from July 21 to August 8. The votes are reset to zero for the final round of public voting, and the winners will be announced on a special BBC1 show in the autumn.
