Fiona cleans up at Midland Age Group Championships

Following the excellent successes achieved by Derventio swimmers at last month’s Midland Youth Championships, the younger members of the squad have seized the opportunity to repeat this feat at the Midland Age Group Championships, which took place in Coventry over the last two weekends.

Yet again, Derventio swimmers have produced exceptional results, winning 12 gold, 10 silver and 7 bronze medals. Star of the show was thirteen-year-old old Fiona Donnelly, who once again, totally dominated, winning an amazing 8 gold and one silver medals.

Fiona then teamed up with Ella Graham, Catherine Williams & Gabby Hignett to also take gold in the 4x200m freestyle team and silver in both the 4x100m freestyle and medley relays.

Other medal winners were:

Ella Graham (13): Gold – 100 & 200m breaststroke

Kevin Wallbank (12): Gold – 200m Butterfly, silver – 800m freestyle, 400m Individual Medley, bronze – 100m butterfly.

Connor Smith (12) silver – 100 & 200m butterfly, bronze 100 & 400m freestyle

Catherine Williams (12): silver -100m backstroke, bronze, 100m Butterfly & Freestyle

Molly Renshaw (12) silver – 200m Breastroke, bronze – 100m breastroke .

Thomas Matthews (13) silver - 100m butterfly

Gabby Hignett (13) bronze – 800m freestyle

Head Coach Mark Rose said: As well as the really pleasing results achieved by our swimmers, It should also be noted how exceptionally well the home clubs in Derbyshire have performed over the last couple of weeks.

Clubs like Belper, City of Derby, Derby Phoenix and Ripley, all gaining multiple medallists and finalists, showing that from grass roots upwards, the swimming community in the county is performing at a very high level.
