Volunteers' Week: Sports student is passing on her athletics experience to others

5 June 2008

Volunteers' Week, which runs from June 1 to 7, is the UK's annual celebration of the work volunteers do. To mark the event, here we highlight some of the volunteering work taking place within sport in Derbyshire.

Lauren Bestwick is a first year sports student at Derby College.

As one of the college’s young leaders she has been involved in volunteering in sport for almost a year, and has helped out at various events including the U13 Schools Athletics Final Championship at Moorways Sports Centre.

As a former athletics competitor, Lauren, (17), also coaches at Rutland Sports Centre Athletics Club, mainly helping with the under 11s in both track and field events.

She said: “I really enjoy doing it and would definitely look at going into coaching when I leave college. I enjoy lots of different sports and play at college.

“My college course keeps me quite busy but I’m not working at the moment so I spend my spare time coaching and volunteering.

“I like doing it because I enjoy being with the people at the club and it is great to see the children learning things they didn’t know.”
