Commuters are being encouraged out of their cars and onto their bikes during National Bike Week, 14-22 June 2008.
Derbyshire Sport and British Cycling are laying down a challenge to see how far Derbyshire can travel during Bike Week. All mileage completed will count, but if you cycle 25 miles or more you will also be in with a chance of winning a brand new bike.
Derbyshire is one of ten counties taking part in the Bike Week Commuter Challenge being promoted through British Cycling’s Everyday Cycling (opens in a new window) initiative, which is aimed specifically at the everyday cyclist.
Local cycling star and Great Britain under 23 international Jon Mozley, from Borrowash, said: "It would be great to see hundreds, if not thousands of Derbyshire people getting on their bikes during Bike Week and cycling to work, even if it’s just for one day!"
Angela Carter, Active Lifestyles Officer for Derbyshire Sport, said: "Cycling is a great way to exercise and travel - we’re asking people to log their cycling miles on www.everydaycycling.com/derbyshire (opens in a new window) to record collectively how many miles we can cycle, how many calories we can burn and how much money we can save on fuel bills.
"Cycling just a few miles a day can make a big difference to your fitness and can be enjoyed with family and friends on Derbyshire’s many cycle trails."
Anyone signing up to the Everyday Cycling site completing the 25 mile Bike Week challenge will be entered into a prize draw to win a £400 bike.
Information about local leisure cycling activities such as events and routes suitable for all types of rider can be found at www.everydaycycling.com/derbyshire (opens in a new window) (opens in a new window). Everyday Cycling also has some basic tips that will help you get back on your bike, including what you need to check before going out on your bike and kit to ensure you cycle safely.
