Registered users of the free cycling information site contributed to the massive mileage total, the equivalent of cycling almost twice around the equator, riding from Lands End to John O’Groats 47 times, or riding a quarter of the distance to the moon!
In the process, Everyday Cycling users who clicked the ‘trip’ button on the site’s activity log indicated that they had saved 972 car journeys during Bike Week, on school runs, commutes and trips to the shops.
Everyday Cycling, which is promoted by British Cycling, has been working with various counties, including Derbyshire, during Bike Week to promote the campaign in an attempt to encourage more people to lead a healthy active lifestyle and take cars off the road.
Although Bike Week is over, people are encouraged to keep logging in and recording daily mileage on www.everydaycycling.com (opens in a new window). It all adds up!
David Joy of Derbyshire Sport said: "Cycling is a great way to keep fit and integrate exercise into your daily routine. With fuel prices as they were it was great to see so many people accepting the challenge to ride 25 miles during Bike Week. We hope people will continue to cycle as part of their normal routines now that they have tried it out."
